Non-Pharmacologic Approaches to the Management of Vertebral Compression Fractures

Why Participate?

This program discusses the role of oncology nurses in caring for patients with cancer who have experienced vertebral compression fractures and in their treatment, including balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. Attention is given to developing a nursing plan of care to manage pain related to this problem as well as improving the patients quality of life.

After completing this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Discuss the problem of VCF in relationship to breast cancer and multiple myeloma.
  2. Summarize best practices for managing pain related to VCF.
  3. Explain differences between balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty.
  4. Develop a plan of care that increases patient compliance and quality of life.
