Advanced Practice Nursing Conference

Scoring Criteria

Scoring Criteria: Administration/Leadership Development and Education Abstracts

  1. Significance and Background: Is the topic significant, important, or relevant to issues that impact the APN's role, work setting or practice? Is the unique role or contribution of the APN described? Is the background of the problem summarized?
  2. Purpose: Does the purpose clearly describe the project or activity? Is the conceptual model/rationale described?
  3. Interventions: Does the intervention or practice describe how the purpose was accomplished? Are the interventions or practices described appropriately for the topic?
  4. Evaluation: Are the project goals evaluated according to specific measures? Are the outcomes applicable to oncology advanced practice nursing?
  5. Discussion: Are the implications for oncology advanced practice nursing identified? Are the suggestions for using the information included?
  6. Presentation: Is the abstract well-written and are the ideas communicated clearly?
  7. Innovative: Is this an innovative cutting-edge study?

Scoring Criteria: Clinical/Evidence-Based Practice Abstracts

  1. Significance and Background: Is the topic significant, important, or relevant to issues that impact the APN's role, work setting or practice? Is the unique role or contribution of the APN described? Is the background of the problem summarized?
  2. Purpose: Does the purpose clearly describe the project or activity? Is the rationale for the topic logical and supported by the clinical information presented?
  3. Interventions: Does the intervention or practice describe how the purpose was accomplished? Are the interventions or practices described appropriately for the clinical topic? Are nursing-sensitive patient outcome interventions described if appropriate? (See: http://www.ons.org/outcomes )
  4. Evaluation: Are the project goals evaluated according to specific measures? Are the clinical practice outcomes applicable to oncology advanced nursing practice?
  5. Discussion: Are the implications for oncology advanced practice nursing practice identified? Are the suggestions for using the information included?
  6. Presentation: Is the abstract well written? Are the ideas clearly communicated?
  7. Innovation: Is this an innovative, cutting-edge topic?

Scoring Criteria: Research Study Abstracts

  1. Significance and Background: Is the topic significant, important, or relevant to oncology nursing practice? Is unique role or contribution of nursing described? Is the background of the problem summarized?
  2. Purpose: Are the purpose, specific aims, or objectives of the study clearly stated? Is the relationship to the ONS Research Agenda/research priorities addressed? (See: http://www.ons.org/research/information )
  3. Conceptual or Clinical Model/Philosophic or Theoretical Framework: Is the conceptual or clinical model/ theoretical framework or philosophic frame of reference (for qualitative research) clearly stated? Is it appropriate to the purpose of the study?
  4. Methods & Analysis: Are the design, sample, and data-collection instruments or methods used to gather data described? Are they appropriate to the purpose of the study? Is the data analysis or plan for the data analysis described? Is it appropriate to the purpose of the study?
  5. Findings and Implications: Do the findings contribute to theory? Do the findings improve clinical decisions or patient outcomes? Do the conclusions flow logically from the findings? If the work is in progress, is evidence of preliminary findings present and/or implications for research, education, or practice? Are there any flaws in the study (e.g. topic not significant to the APN , statistical errors, improper sampling)?
  6. Presentation: Is the abstract well written? Are the ideas clearly communicated?
  7. Innovation: Is this an innovative cutting-edge study?
